Gill M. Sorg has defeated incumbent Councilor Gil Jones in the Las Cruces City Council District 5 race.

Sorg has 1,163 votes to Jones’ 631 votes, according to unofficial results obtained by NMPolitics.net. That includes tallies collected from receipts posted on the doors of all five polling places in the district and early and absentee voting.

Sorg, a candidate who was backed by the city’s progressive movement, said in an interview that he is declaring victory. He has not yet talked with Jones.

“I think it makes a statement about what’s going on here in Las Cruces,” Sorg said of his victory. “There needs to be a change — a change for better planning, smart growth.”

Of Jones, Sorg said, “I think he’s a decent person and I look forward to working with him in the future. I certainly would listen to his words that he has to say, his thoughts.”

Jones could not immediately be reached for comment.
