Right-to-work laws hurt all workers and the economy (10)
7/23/12 •
The Rio Grande Foundation can try to cobble together all the complex statistical formulae in the world, but the reality is their vision of a workforce with no rights and no power almost always leads to lower wages and higher unemployment.
Luján has been workers’ true champion and hero (2)
1/19/12 •
House Speaker Ben Luján has not only led, but he has done so with a serenity, grace and skill that is unmatched in New Mexico politics, and I daresay in political circles anywhere in America. It’s hard to put into words how much Speaker Luján has meant to working people throughout the state.
My prediction: Mitt’s the man (24)
1/13/12 •
It’s not too late for a non-Mitt to win the GOP primary, but it’s getting close. The main reason Romney won’t lose? The reasons for each of the big four non-Mitts staying in are too compelling for any one of them to drop in the next few weeks.
Knowing the difference between red and blue (11)
10/24/11 •
One activist at a recent Occupy Wall Street protest held a sign saying, “Red or blue, they screw you.” Talk about undiscerning. Changing the country is going to take more than protests. It means knowing who is on the side of 99 percent of us and who is not.
Ten years gone, and work to do (8)
9/07/11 •
In 10 years, we’ve had good success in fighting our enemies using one of three avenues: force. Let’s work on improving our diplomatic game and economic independence over the next 10 years and end this war on terrorism for good.
Fact checking the Rio Grande Foundation: Sloppy and deceptive (8)
3/07/11 •
The Rio Grande Foundation has launched another series of attacks on workers that are deceptive at best and out-and-out false at worst. Here’s a point-by-point refutation.
Apples to Apples: Public workers make less (29)
1/27/11 •
The Rio Grande Foundation can claim otherwise, but when you compare apples to apples, public sector workers make less than private sector workers.
The common agenda (2)
11/23/10 •
Dems are bound to disagree with the incoming administration on some issues, but the early transition from campaign to governance is showing promise for partnership.
The myth of bloated government (10)
10/18/10 •
If you listen to the GOP and their leader, Susana Martinez, you’d think that not only is the budget bigger than under Gary, but that we have 5,000 more state employees than we had before the current administration. Nope. In fact, the opposite is true.
Telling the truth about budgets (20)
9/07/10 •
Susana Martinez continues to consistently claim that state government has grown by 50 percent (sometimes she says 54 percent) during the last 7.5 years. Her allegation about state government is simply not true, and it’s not even close.
Doubling down on a big whopper (10)
8/20/10 •
It’ll be interesting to see if Susana Martinez keeps doubling down on a whopper, or if she comes clean and says she’s simply changed her mind about vouchers (which might antagonize her fellow Republicans). The latter might make her a flip-flopper, but at least there’d be integrity to it.
Drop the political rhetoric, join the real debate (19)
4/23/10 •
Tea party ideological rants about government being evil don’t provide any guidance for how to improve our economy. Instead, now is the time to have a real debate, and a specific, detailed discussion about how to help the private sector rebound and how to improve the public sector.
Health-care reform is anything but scary (19)
4/07/10 •
Let’s not pretend that health-care reform is some socialist plot, or government takeover, or the end of freedom as we know it. Only two types of people make those claims: those ignorant of what’s in the bill, and those who know better but who are hoping for political gain based on fear.
Clarifying the big picture (4)
3/10/10 •
Lost in the whole health-care debate are simple questions, like what kind of system creates the best incentives for people to stay healthy. The answer to that question was made clear to me this week by CIGNA.
