AG King to run for governor in 2014
Attorney General Gary King confirmed today that he plans to run for governor in 2014.
From the Albuquerque Journal:
“King, a two-term attorney general and son of three-term New Mexico Gov. Bruce King, said today he plans to run for governor in 2014. He announced plans for the election bid on the Albuquerque radio station KANW.”
As of publication of this article, KANW 89.1-FM doesn’t have its report about King on its website.
King, a Democrat, could face Republican Gov. Susana Martinez if she seeks re-election. But he’ll first have to wade through what could be a crowded Democratic primary. And following what many call a lackluster tenure as AG, there are many Democrats who don’t want King to be the party’s nominee.
Nonetheless, the son of a former governor carries clout and, as a statewide elected official, King has to be taken seriously.

Richardson was a great governor, way better than La Tejana Susana.
I am not sure who we Democrats would run for governor this next go around. Maybe Hector, maybe Lawrence Rael, not Romero or Brian Colon. Romero cannot be trusted and Brian just can’t win. Maybe Joe Campos from Santa Rosa?
That being said, if Democrats don’t trash each other too, too much in the primaries, we will have a Democratic Governor.
This is the same thinking that led to the 8 year reign of Bill Richardson.
Been the type of thinking going on in New Mexico for a long time.
“Gary King: “I’m a Democrat, I’m Bruce King’s son, and I’m not Susanna Martinez” Qualified enough, I suppose.”
This is the same thinking that led to the 8 year reign of Bill Richardson.
To the extent Balderas can define himself as someone not beholding to Richardson and other Demo dynasty patrons, he’ll be a breath of fresh air. But if he surrounds himself with the same ol’ same ol’ from the party, then he doesn’t deserve to be Governor. We need someone trully committed to public service verses self service. Richardson was the empitome of the latter, and as a State we’re sill paying for the mess he left behind. Another gargantuan ego in the governor’s mansion is NOT what we need, nor do we meet someone who’s only interested in greasing the skids for the next step up the political ladder. Ambition is was blinds them to the public need. Fund raising becomes the priority–sucking up to the money interest in other words. We do NOT need that type of leadership anymore in New Mexico. I’ll vote for any candidate that convinces me he or she truly cares about the needs of people first, political ambition second. A near impossible dream I know, but still one worth pursuing.
Hard to see how Gary King will even get 25% of the vote in the Democratic primary.
I don’t know who I’ll be for if Hector Balderas does not run. Whoever has the best education and economic policies on their website on the day he or she announces, I suppose. No more hoping the candidate will grow while campaigning. Either he or she has got a vision and policy agenda on Day One or forget it.
His accomplishments? He reformed the housing authorities, rooted out embezzlement and fraud, stood up do unethical and illegal actions by officeholders of both parties, etc. etc. Hector Balderas is the best State Auditor in America and one of the best State Cabinet Officers in America.
So, I take it that we are all on the same page about this?
“If Mr. Balderas chooses not to run, we have other fine choices, including Lawrence Rael, Brian Colon, and Richard Romero.”
Ugh…please not those last three…can’t you guys offer up some fresh faces instead of trotting out all the old recycled usual suspects? Sheesh…spare us, ALL of us, please.
Balderas certainly meets the criteria for many New Mexicans to vote for him. Most importantly as pointed out repeatedly in the recent election is that he grew up poor and is “Hispanic”……terrifical…..I think he contracted out a few audits but i don’t know of any other accomplishments. Perhaps someone would point them out. I guess in our state just being Dem is enuf……..We Rs elect a guv only when people vote AGAINST the Dem…..Powell, King after 3 terms, Marty Chavez, and Denish……
Okay, I’ll be the first to advocate for a Hector Balderas and Al Park ticket in 2014. Hector Balderas for Governor. Al Park for Lieutenant Governor. Balderas-Park. The best of a new generation.
I think that our party’s nominee should be Hector Balderas, if he chooses to run for Governor. If not, he’ll make a great Attorney General.
If Mr. Balderas chooses not to run, we have other fine choices, including Lawrence Rael, Brian Colon, and Richard Romero.
Hector Balderas is an expert on state and local government and has demonstrated courage, honesty, integrity, intelligence, independence, and boldness in that job.
Even allowing his campaign team to run a mediocre campaign for U.S. Senate in which he offered no real vision for the future and no serious policy agenda, he ended up doing extremely well in the recent primary. Did he win 42% of the vote in the end?
There is no way Hector Balderas would run that kind of campaign for Governor. He knows as much about state and local government as all but maybe 20 other people in our state. He will put forward a real vision for the future of our state and a real policy agenda on education and economic growth. In private he speaks about both policy arenas with great intelligence and insight, and it’s unfortunate his campaign team wasn’t up to par and able to present his strengths as a leader. Although we have a fine nominee for U.S. Senate and there’s no reason to look back.
A great campaign has to be built around the strengths of the candidate and leader, and Hector Balderas has so many potential strengths as Governor and as a candidate for Governor that he will be directing them this time, rather than relying on people who let him down. It’s a whole different ballgame for Hector Balderas to run for Governor than for him to run for federal office, where he was on unfamiliar terrain and relied too much on others.
More importantly, Hector Balderas has the capacity to be the best Governor in the history of New Mexico. Other than cleaning up the old Richardson political machine, Susanna Martinez is a status quo Governor on both education and the economy. We all like her personality and her style of leadership, but she’s not really leading us anywhere, and that will become clear to everyone by 2014.
Hector Balderas just went through a rather challening growth experience by running for U.S. Senate, and I think that by Spring 2013 he’ll be ready to offer a bold vision and policy agenda that will truly transform our state and our lives. But, who knows, he may play it safe and run for Atttorney General, and then we’ll all look around for the next-best candidate and get behind that person.
Gary King: “I’m a Democrat, I’m Bruce King’s son, and I’m not Susanna Martinez” Qualified enough, I suppose.
Gary King has written his own political obituary: “I was Attorney General of New Mexico, and I did absolutely nothing.” Not much of a legacy to run for governor.

It was genetically pre-determined. At last, when he loses big time, we will be done with that dynasty, now on to the Udalls.
Gary King is running for Governor of New Mexico? Water/wet, sky/blue, etc.
