Reject super PAC lies

Recently a shadowy outside group attacked me with outright lies. To be clear, I’m a lifelong Democrat and I ask you to reject these vile attacks.

When I decided to run against longtime, entrenched incumbent Sheryl Williams Stapleton, I set out to change the tone in Santa Fe and restore civility to the process.

I knew it would be a hard-fought race. As a regular citizen, wife, mother of four and law student I was going up against a longtime power broker who would do anything to stay in power. People warned me that I would be called names, attacked, my character distorted and smeared – and that desperate people will do anything they can to keep power.

Recently, a shadowy outside group called the Independent Source PAC, a super PAC created out of the U.S. Supreme Court’s Citizen United decision, attacked me with outright lies.

Worse, they attacked a friend of 24 years with smears against his character using distortions and guilt by association to attack me. This is outrageous, and I call on all citizens of New Mexico to reject these “Karl Rove” like dirty tricks.

As a lifelong Democrat who has 25 years of working for Democratic campaigns and issues, recently for the Democratic Party of New Mexico as well as Senator Tom Udall’s campaign in 2008, I will be a strong advocate for working families, affordable health care, public schools and a woman’s right to choose.

I ask you to reject these vile attacks from my opponent and her surrogates and keep rogue super PACs from trying to tamper with this district’s vote.

We need to change the destructive tone in politics and work to get things done.

Valente-Compton, a Democrat, is a candidate for the District 19 seat in the N.M. House.
