Grisham paid property taxes late

Michelle Lujan Grisham

Michelle Lujan Grisham

Democratic 1st Congressional District candidate Michelle Lujan Grisham paid her county property taxes late seven of the last 10 years, the Albuquerque Journal is reporting.

The newspaper reported that the Bernalillo County commissioner has paid about $450 in late fines and interest fees since 2002, but all back taxes have been paid.

The campaign’s comment to the Journal, from spokesman Gilbert Gallegos:

“Michelle recognizes that as a public official, she should be held to the highest standards. She has taken responsibility for her taxes, paid the full amount and paid penalties ranging between $11 and $56 for late payments, just as any other taxpayer would be expected to do.”

  1. And Griego received the prestigious Sloan Fellowship in public policy, before the name changed to the PPIA.

  2. IP and Michael,

Thanks for the information.  I recalled that Marty had a JD, but was unsure about the other two.  I went to Griego’s website and did not see any reference to his degrees.  IMO, not mentioning his degrees is a marketing mistake.

  3. Eric Griego ” …  received a BA in Journalism and Government from New Mexico State University in 1989 and a MPA in Public Management from the University of Maryland in 1991.”

Question: Does either Griego or MLG have either a 2-year or a 4-year degree?

If my google fu were stronger I could probably find a better answer, but I’m weak in the force tonight.

  4. Mr. Spear:

They both actually have more than that; Senator Griego has a Master’s in public administration, and Commissioner Lujan Grisham has a Juris Doctorate (incidentally, so does former-Mayor Chávez).

  5. Er, Hemingway, did you actually look at Michelle Lujan Grisham’s website before you made that claim?  It’s plain-as-day, listed under “Issues” with everything else; that she has no specific record on it is unsurprising, considering that she’s never held a position where its specifically relevant, but where is it written that candidates have to check off all the relevant boxes as if running for office is no more than a To Do List?

  6. Question: Does either Griego or MLG have either a 2-year or a 4-year degree?

  7. By the way Michelle Lujan Grisham lacks any kind of record regarding the protection of  the environment and offers no support for clean energy. She obviously has no interest in or knowledge of the issue. The issue does not even appear on her website.

  8. Well, when they run for office, they clean house and tie up all those loose ends.  Seriously, most people who own property just own their residence.  Usually, the property taxes are in the escrow that is taken out monthly with the mortgage.  Hence, most people in NM do not give property taxes much thought.  Still, pretty sorry for a professional bureaucrat.

  9. It begs the question, however, that if Ms. Grisham pays her federal taxes on time and suffers even heftier penalties on a regular basis. I guess we will never know. But if there’s a pattern of this kind of behavior on her part, then I’d have to agree that it would be irresponsible.

Elected officials like Ms. Grisham are held to a higher standard given that they pass laws all the time and expect the common person to abide by them.

  10. Dr. J is right.  A single late payment means little, but 7 times in the last 10 years either shows a lack of attention to personal financial detail or the strong possibility of financial hardship.  Neither of these events is a good sign for someone who wants to represent CD 1 in Washington, D.C.

Where is the vetting of these people?!?  This is easy, yet important, information to find out.  Why does this information come out just before the election?

  11. Doing this routinely, 7 of the last 10 years, is more than being forgetful.  It shows a lack of attention to details and responsibilities.  I have never paid mine late, I always pay as soon as the bill arrives, as I’m sure many do.  Procrastination and inattention to responsibilities is not a virtue for an elected official.  This is too public for people like that and just doesn’t look good.  Why do it?

  12. Who cares as long as she paid them.  I am constantly paying my bills late,  I get them in the mail, throw them in the stack and forgot about them.  It has happened to all of us.

Show me one person who has never paid a bill late because they forgot.  I know more people who have paid their bills late than people who fail to appear in court for 10 years.
