Gay-rights group to protest pastor’s comments
A gay-rights organization plans to protest on Sunday in front of Legacy Church in Albuquerque in response to comments Pastor Steve Smothermon made recently to NMPolitics.net.
KOAT-TV in Albuquerque has the goods on the protest. Watch the station’s report by clicking here.
Smothermon was complaining to NMPolitics.net about Gov. Susana Martinez appointing a gay man to the Public Regulation Commission.
“With a governor who looked me in the eye personally and said she’s socially conservative, she believes that marriage is between one man and one woman, who said she wouldn’t espouse the homosexual agenda, I think this goes against that,” Smothermon told NMPolitics.net. “… These aren’t the people we voted for you to appoint. We voted for you to appoint people who think like we do.”

I grew up with a fundamentalist grandmother. When I was in my teens, I attempted to have a rational discussion with her about the fact that there are so many different churches in the world which must mean there are many paths available to God. She would have none of it. Her mind and heart and voice said her way was the only way to reach and worship God. Even at the immature age of 16 or 17, I recognized that as a much, much too narrow path for religion. Mr. Smothermon reminds me of the inflexibility of my grandmother, even though she, with limited resources, gave generously to others. I feel sorry for his congregation, that they are being led in a very wrong direction.
This must be a guy who is not comfortable living in a world where anyone thinks differently than he does. How sad, for him and for his congregation.
Is that what Smothermon calls what he does? thinking?
