Congressional run isn’t likely, Cote says

Nate Cote

Former State Rep. Nate Cote told NMPolitics.net in May that he was “seriously” considering running for Congress next year; he now tells the Las Cruces Sun-News that isn’t likely.

“It’s on the fourth, rear burner of a three-burner stove at this point,” the newspaper quoted Cote as saying. “Unless redistricting would bring about the possibility of where a Democrat would have a chance – I might reconsider.”

Cote, a Democrat, told the Sun-News he plans instead to try next year to recapture the state House seat he lost in 2010.

All indications are that U.S. Rep. Steve Pearce, R-N.M., plans to seek re-election to the congressional seat next year. Sunland Park Mayor Martin Resendiz, a Democrat, says he’s also running for the seat. So is Frank McKinnon, a Democrat who ran for the seat in 2008 but failed to win the support from party delegates to appear on the primary ballot.
