Bregman to challenge Gonzales for Dem chairmanship

Criminal defense attorney Sam Bregman says he’ll challenge Javier Gonzales for the chairmanship of the Democratic Party of New Mexico later this year.

“The last election cycle was unacceptable, as far as I am concerned,” Bregman was quoted by the Albuquerque Journal as saying.

Bregman is a well-known attorney who defended, among others, former state Treasurer Robert Vigil in his public corruption case.

Letitia Montoya, who most recently worked on the losing campaign of former Secretary of State Mary Herrera, says she’s also seeking the position.

Democrats will gather in April to pick a new chair.

  1. Heath:

Not sure why you decided not to post my comment on this story from early Sunday morning…I thought it was relatively benign and did convey to the NM dems the need to cast a wider net for the chair spot.

  2. Wedum, perhaps you should learn your facts. Javier Gonzales was an elected official, so your implication that he has no campaign experience shows how much you know about NM history or government. Having said that, he obviously hasnt applied that campaign experience to the state party in any sophisticated way. In my opinion, he’s been nothing more than a lazy figurehead, doing the usual flakking for the top of the ticket. Had he and his staff been in the trenches, fighting more of a Howard Dean “we’re gonna compete everywhere” strategy, than the Dem Party wouldnt have almost lost the House. Myopically focusing on the top alone has hurt us, and will hurt us big time in 2012 without a different strategy.

Btw, didnt Leticia finish near the bottom of that 4 way race? Not the experience we need either. Sam is a fighter, and hopefully he will fight for the dems on all levels, and raise the money to make that happen.

  3. Thank, you, DJ, for at least mentioning Letitia Montoya’s candidacy, even though you don’t support her.

I think that a DPNM chair who has some campaign experience (she ran in the 4-way Democratic primary for the Dem SOS nomination in 2006, so has some state-wide exposure) would be the person most qualified to help ELECT DEMOCRATS. As I recall, she provided technical support in the SOS office for some length of time. (Do you have any info on that, Heath?) It would be great to have someone with a practical background as chair, and being computer savvy doesn’t hurt either.

Show Me doesn’t seem to know much New Mexico political history. This was the worst drubbing for Democrats since 1994, FYI.

  4. I support Bregman’s candidacy. Javier Gonzales is just like the Dem. party in Dona Ana County…just a bunch of people who want a title but do very little to help elect democrats. Gonzales and his cronies presided over the worst drubbing of democrats in who knows how long. If the Dem. Party was an organization that actually cared about and worked to win more races than just the top of the ticket, we wouldnt be in the position we are today. Now, the Repubs are only 3 seats away from winning the state House, and the entire Senate is up next election.

For God sake, someone stop these wannabe leaders before they cost us both chambers of the legislature and beyond. They have no vision, no plan to help local candidates, and a worse track record. Go Sam go!

  5. For the Repubs, the only better chair than Letitia would be a trial lawyer with interesting judgment in client selection. But, it seems Javy is chastened and has learned his lesson about being too far left for the majority of his party. I suspect he will look very center and moderate compared to these other two and thus instill confidence in the moderate and conservative wings of the party, which will win him another term.
