Pearce ups challenge to 18 debates
With U.S. Rep. Harry Teague not directly answering Steve Pearce’s challenge to 10 “town-hall style” debates across the district, and instead accusing him of ignoring some counties, Pearce has upped his challenge to 18 debates – one in each county in the 2nd Congressional District.
“Since they like talking about 18 counties, Steve is happy to debate Teague in all 18 counties,” Pearce spokesman Jason Heffley said. “Will they accept? Or will Teague continue to prefer to hide behind staff or in private settings? The question remains – will he agree to debating in 8 or 18 counties?”
The campaigns are already discussing with media outlets having 2-3 formal debates, the Pearce campaign has said. On Wednesday, Pearce, the Republican in the race, issued an additional challenge to Teague, the Democrat, to debate him 10 times in at least eight counties across the district in “town-hall style” formats.
The response from Teague’s campaign manager was that there “will be debates,” but he didn’t directly answer Pearce’s challenge. Instead, he pointed out that Pearce has ducked debates in past elections and said “the real news” is that Pearce’s “debate dodging days are possibly over.”
And he asked, since Pearce wants debates in eight counties, which of the district’s 18 counties Pearce thinks should be ignored.
I’ve asked the Teague campaign for a response to the new challenge from the Pearce campaign. I’ll let you know how Teague responds.

Let’s not get President Obama and Congressman Teague mixed up, jivaroo is a bit off track.
Re the national debt: President Reagan set the standard by tripling the US national debt between 1981 and 1989, i.e. 0.9 Trillion dollars to 2.7 Trillion dollars. So since President Obama inherited a 10.6 Trillion dollar debt, he will have to increase the US national debt to 31.8 Trillion dollars to match Reagan’s record. Reagan started our country on this path, and as the debt snowballs it becomes more and more difficult to stop that snowball.
The only president to control the US budget during the 20th century was Clinton, who raised taxes and achieved a budget surplus the last two years of his administration, and were the Republicans supporting him and congratulating him at this time? NO, they were screaming about Monica Lewinsky and anything else they could find to push the hate buttons of American citizens. So, jivaroo, raising taxes is the only way that has been proven to reduce the deficit.
None of which has anything to do with debates between Teague and Pearce. Eighteen is ridiculous. Three debates would be plenty!
My opponent, Nora Espinoza, is now one for five in attendance at forums that provide the audience with an opportunity to compare us on the issues. She attended the primary candidate forum in Weed. She did not attend the primary forums in Mayhill or Pinon, or the August 19 NARFE candidate forum, or even the “Restore the Constitution” rally held outside of Capitan on August 14. (I attended this forum, properly accessorized, and spoke about Article 5 and what a call for a Constitutional convention would involve.) In 2008 she was a No Show at the Leadership Roswell televised forum (among others).
All I hear from Hemingway, Moe and sugar is sour apples. Why don’t you look at what you have now and weigh it against what we had with Bush? Are you all so blind to the way our country is headed and the debt the Democrats and Obama have put us in? Do you want to live under a Socialistic government, or a dictatorship?
At the present time this is where we are headed. I for one value the freedoms our forefathers instilled in the Constitution. We are becoming a Godless country and therein lies our destruction. Take a long look at the past history of the world and you will be able to equate it with the fall of the great powers of the past. When any country comes under a Socialist, communist or dictator government it has fallen. Do any of you out there think that we, as Americans are immune to what is coming down?
Congressman Teague will be in Washington working for the people in September and October. I know Mr Pearce would not have done 18 debates back when he was in Washington working for Bush.
Just like Congressman Pearce – he only wants to hear himself talk. Harry has held well over a hundred town halls in every county in his district, and come back to the district every weekend since being elected. Listening to his constituents has always been his top priority. How many town halls did Congressman Pearce hold during his entire time in Congress? How many times did he come back to NM, or the biggest town in the district, Las Cruces. Harry did more in 6 months than Congressman Pearce did in 6 years.
Eighteen debates is ridiculous and absurd. However in the gubernatorial race we need more debates! Both Ms. Martinez and Ms. Denish are like couple of wallflowers. As Geraldine Ferraro, a former VP candidate, said: “See that’s a goal that I think it’s very good in the debate to find out who the person is.” New Mexicans want to know these candidates.
