County clerk names new elections supervisor

Doña Ana County has a new elections supervisor.

Trey LeFluer has been a temporary employee in the county’s elections bureau since March 18. He was instrumental in the success of the June 1 primary, County Clerk Lynn Ellins said in a news release, so he’s promoted LeFluer to elections supervisor.

“He has been assigned several special projects, all of which he has performed with great competence,” Ellins wrote in an e-mail to his staff announcing the promotion. He added that LeFluer’s appointment has been welcomed by the entire staff.

A 2009 graduate of New Mexico State University, LeFleur holds a bachelor’s degree in government. He is a 2005 graduate of Las Cruces High School.

Prior to working for the county, LeFleur was a field organizer for the Democratic Party of New Mexico, supervising up to 100 volunteers in Hidalgo, Grant and Luna counties. In 2010, he managed the successful election campaign of Nora Barraza, the new mayor of the Town of Mesilla.

While at NMSU, he was employed by MobileCampus, an arm of the university’s student council, as an enrollment team supervisor heading up a staff of 12.

LeFleur will earn $27,414 annually, the news release states.

The position has been vacant since early May, when the county parted ways with Bob Bartelsmeyer.

  1. Thanks, we will do our best..

  2. Thanks for the response, Lynn. Hope he works out as you hope. There seemed to be unhappy employees and turnover in that department until you got there. Hope everything remains calm and organized for the election.

  3. In case there was any doubt, the last comment is from Lynn Ellins, Dona Ana County’s clerk.

  4. Thank you for the compliment, and good questions.

There was no advertisement for the position because it is a temporary, 6 month, appoinment. – as was mine when I was appointed Elections Supervisor in 2006. When a permanent Supervisor is sought, the position will be advertised locally and nationally – as it was when it was most recently filled last August.

No, his experience as a Democrat was not the issue. Supervisory experience was the issue. It just so happens that he was a Democrat who was hired – and paid – by others to fill supervisory positions, and in that regard his record is good.

Based upon my personal observation, he is a very quick learner and I can assure galrepub that he is already on top of the state Election Law and hits the ground running. He is an excellent public speaker and writes well – a strong prerequisite when working in an area such as elections, which is statute and rule-making driven.

And finallly, no, there was no interest by anyone on staff in seeking the position, even among senior members. Indeed, staff imembers have told me that it is a good appointment and they look forward to the new arrangement.

  5. First, may I say the Clerks office has certainly calmed down and cleaned up its act under Lynn Ellins. He is always helpful and professional But, this new election supervisor was a temp employee for 5 months, now he is Elections Supervisor? I don’t recall seeing an employment announcement for this job. Was he hired because he has worked in a clerks office before and has experience? Seems his only credentials are that he is a democratic, ran a campaign and watched over volunteers. What is his actual knowledge of voting laws, etc? Wasn’t there a current employee, with department experience, who would have been interested in moving up?
