Denish hits Martinez in new TV ad
Democratic gubernatorial nominee Diane Denish is out with a new TV ad today that seeks to portray her Republican opponent, Susana Martinez, as an ineffective prosecutor who has broken promises and put criminals back on the street.
Here’s the ad:
Denish’s campaign said the ad is running statewide on network and cable television. It provided this fact sheet to back up the ad.
I’m working on an in-depth article on the claims made in the ad. I’ll post that article later tonight or first thing Friday morning.

Both ladies running for office need to start with what they’ve done, Denish started mud slinging immediately. Denish’s silence is her biggest enemy. She needs to show what she has done; using taxpayer dollars to slander candidates is unethical. Since her campaign staff hasn’t found much; they resort to quick attacks; that is until they research Denish’s contribution; which is obviously little. Maybe we should grant all democrats angel wings, since they seem to be on either right or left wings in their ideals.
Martinez is a district attorney and soldier in trenches against crime; Denish stepping on her is an insult to what veterans have done for this country. It isn’t pretty what trenches offer and Denish doesn’t seem to be in them often. These attacks will continue; until she can dig something up, pedestal it, inform the public, take credit, claim it her own; all while it was a soldier’s or citizen idea of how to fix a problem.
This makes her a candidate? If she has done so much for this state; why is taking so long to find what she has done, then promote it? We pay taxes for her to insult an entrenched candidate wanting to improve the same old immunity Denish enjoys! This system of checks and balance needs verification, the Bush presidency proved the electoral system is failing as much the judicial system is, we don’t need a democrat to tell us that. How can she look herself in the mirror in the morning? How many of us would like Jane Fonda in office? Just vote Denish in office, you’ll get locked up sooner, or the Hanoi Hilton may be relocated to Santa Fe. Wait, that’s where Ted Turner owns land, and controls a media circus we tune in daily for? Coincidence?
bobwolfe- I read the article but, again I reiterate, not spit, Too Little, Too Late. She was inconsistent at best and 98% negligent in her duties at worst, considering the amount of backroom deals and pay to play that has gone on. She kept quiet for political expediency within the administration. A true lap dog in every sense of the word.
ksparks, spitting at your computer screen that “she was there and did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING” over and over again, is neither convincing or sanitary. From perusing the comments section in Heath’s recent write up — http://www.nmpolitics.net/index/2010/05/denish-has-stood-up-against-corruption/ — I see you must have either missed reading the article, or you ignored it entirely. I’m tired now. I’m going to click a bunch of ads and go to bed. Buenas noches.
bobwolfe, it’s NOT that she was there…it is that she was there and did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about it. NOW she is coming out and opposing the things that she has NO RECORD of opposing as President of the New Mexico State Senate and as member of the Border Authority, where she could have entered at any time during a session and went on the record with her opposition. But NO…she was extremely comfortable as Bill Richardson’s, Ben Lujan’s, and Michael Sanches’s lap dog. Why does she oppose it all now? She knows people are sick and tired of the Richardson administration and that they know she did absolutely nothing to speak out against it because she thought that it would hurt her current status. Now that their status is hurt, she has a change of heart. Too little, too late. She has absolutely no record of any accomplishments except laying in the laps of the current pathetic state of New Mexico.
Oh for heaven’s sake ksparks. I was sort of thinking, maybe, that you and your “Diane is personally responsible for all corrupt things in NM because she was there” posse, could come up with some more substantial dirt on *Denish*, not defend Susana’s lousy record. You’re playing right into the dem’s hands. Besides, I hate to say it, but most voters are too dumb to care if you cant’ make you’re point simply, in 30 seconds or less.
Here bobwolfe:
From January 1, 2000 to June 3, 2010, there have been 79 homicide cases in Doña Ana County, which includes 1st degree murder, 2nd degree murder, voluntary/involuntary manslaughter and child abuse resulting in death.
TOTAL CASES: 79
CASES STILL PENDING: 40
CLOSED CASES: 39
NON-CONVICTIONS: 4 (2 not guilty at trial, 1 determined self-defense by District Attorney and dismissed, 1 reversed on appeal)
CONVICTIONS: 35
CONVICTION RATE: 89.7%
A felony DWI case is pled down by eliminating a past DWI conviction in limited cases when a prior DWI cannot be proven, such as when another agency is unable to produce a record of a past conviction or when the evidence does not support the felony DWI.
In 2009, the Doña Ana County DAs office had a 90% conviction rate on felony DWIs (out of the 59 cases that were disposed, only six cases did not result in a conviction).
Of the major Judicial Districts, the Doña Ana County DAs office has the lowest plea bargain rate in the state for felony DWIs.

Relax people. Denish can’t go too hard on Susana for too long or the sympathy factor might set in. Indeed, it’s going to be a long, hot summer. This is probably just a taste of what’s to come… But let me also say, you guys are going to need more than a bunch of whining and innuendo for your candidate to win. A fact sheet like the one the Denish camp supplied, that PROVES something, anything, might be a good start.
There really is nothing–absolutely nothing– in Susana Martinez’s resume that makes her a good candidate to be the Governor of New Mexico. Except her ambition. I could give you a list of at least 100 people in Las Cruces who are as or even more qualified to run the Executive Branch of the state, many of whom actually put in their time in the trenches would be good at working with the legislature.
If Diane Denish is smart, she’ll send staff down to the outback of NM and do a little simple opposition research. Talk to the people. She’ll find that we are a very small town, in that a whole lot of us have had professional and personal interactions with Susana and her office which will tell a far different story about her opponent than what will be concocted for the voters. Actually, a lot of the real story is not even bad–”ordinary” would be a good way to describe her career as a DA here. It’s just that it won’t match up to the fairly tale that is being concocted as we speak, designed specifically to motivate the uninformed and angry voters that currently make up the majority of her party.
You know, the ones who believe she has filled our jails with convicted drug cartel leaders and illegal immigrants, and who think she’ll outlaw taxes…
Fearthelobos… that that statistic would be a negative in regard to toughness on crime requires an assumption that a low homicide conviction rate indicates poor prosecution and not that prosecution harshly pursued every suspect. That statistic could actually indicate a very tough stance on crime and willingness to try suspects where there is little evidence against such suspect. A police state mentality of prosecution would likely have very low conviction rates if the judiciary is liberal and considerate of civil liberties.
Frankly, I could care less about someone’s skewed method of statistical research. Diane Denish has been Bill Richardson’s “water girl” or lap dog for eight years, that CERTTAINLY doesn’t make her ready to be Governor.
Are none of you hearing this ad. She has the WORST homicide conviction rate in New Mexico. Dear lord. That makes her ready to be Governor?
Good point ksparks. Ms. Denish needs to start distancing herself from the La Poltica corruption and positions in Santa Fe over the last 8 years. She was silent for 8 years, perhaps fearful of Richardson and Lujan, now she needs to speak up but also explain why she was silent for so long. If she doesn’t explain why she was mute to alll that was happening, she will run the risk of being seen as a flip-flopper, or worse, a hypocrite. She needs a firm and clear positon on the goings on over the last 8 years, and time is growing short for contrition and calling out those like Richardson.
Today’s ABQ Journal headline, “Denish Opposes Illegals’ Licenses.” Why didn’t she espouse this opposition as Lt. Governor when it was being discussed and debated in the legislature? Why didn’t she take the floor as President of the State Senate and have a record of this opposition? TOO LITTLE, TOO LATE, DIANE!!! You can’t remain silent when it is being proposed and then flip flop to oppose it when that little Chihuahua with a sharp tongue and the toughness of a pit bull with rabies espouses her opposition from her experience as an effective prosecutor. I’ll think I’ll send Susana my first contribution for the General Election righ now, in honor of your sudden “opposition” to the policy you helped create.
Wow. Only two days for “attacks” (at least this is based on facts) to start. This is gonna be a rough election.
