Martinez softens rhetoric against Denish

Susana Martinez

After being called out last week for falsely saying Lt. Gov. Diane Denish has done nothing to combat corruption, Republican gubernatorial candidate Susana Martinez is toning down the rhetoric a bit, now saying Denish has “failed to lead on the issue of corruption.”

The shift comes after NMPolitics.net called Martinez out on Friday for falsely claiming that Denish has done nothing to stand up to corruption, “not even a whisper.” As I wrote last week, Denish played an integral role in standing up to corruption in the state’s housing authority system and in winning legislative approval of reform of the system.

Here’s today’s statement from Martinez that contains the new rhetoric:

“For seven plus years, Lieutenant Governor Diane Denish has been part of an administration that has wasted taxpayer dollars, defrauded New Mexico citizens and abused the public trust. Now, as a gubernatorial candidate, Denish believes voters will ignore the fact that she failed to lead on the issue of corruption. As governor, I will put a stop to the nonsense and identify the corruption, remove it and my administration will hold to account those who have broken the law. Denish can claim anything she wants, but New Mexico voters understand that I am the candidate who will deliver bold change and get our state back on track.”

The statement comes in response to a new Denish ad that highlights the role the lieutenant governor – who is now the Democratic nominee for governor – played in reform of the housing authority system.

  1. Martinez demonstrates time and time again that she’s the type of person who will only tell the part of the truth that’s most convenient for her. Take for instance the attack ad where she proclaims Weh supported amnesty for illegals — backed by Hillary Clinton & Barack Obama… What she fails to mention is that “liberals” like George W. Bush & John McCain supported the same legislation. The woman speaks with a forked tongue.

  2. Please correct previous submission, should be “All Denish has to do is STATE THAT as the leader of New Mexico…”

  3. The Lt. Governor position is not a leadership position. All Denish has to do is as the leader of New Mexico she will do things her way and then specify how her administration will differ from Big Bill’s.

BTW the latest polls show a possible all-Hispanic ticket for the Republicans (Martinez and Sanchez). If NM has an all-Hispanic, Republican ticket that is tough on illegal immigration, that might help break the log jam on this issue. White bread like Weh being tough (or not) on illegal immigration isn’t news.

  4. Show me where Denish did anything directly to stop corruption. If she had done anything positive, the people would be in better shape than our government is right now. She followed along like a sheep behind everything that was done in the Richardson administration. That sure doesn’t make Denish Governor material.

I don’t think Martinez was impressed so much by your blog calling her down Heath, as she was by answering the attack on her by Weh. She is a fair woman who calls it like it really is and will make an excellent Governor. Weh hurt himself with the voters with his attack on her. We don’t need another little dictator like Richardson, therefore we don’t need Weh.

  5. Denish was a follower in the housing authority scandal, if not a dupe. She chaired the Committee. She DID help – but only after others (Papen and Arnold-Jones) opened the door.
