King seeks to have Sloan removed from office

Carol Sloan

Public Regulation Commissioner Carol Sloan was sentenced today to five years on probation for felony convictions of aggravated battery and aggravated burglary.

Being a convicted felon makes Sloan ineligible to hold office, and Attorney General Gary King filed a petition with the New Mexico Supreme Court asking that she be removed from the position.

“My office petitioned the court for Carol Sloan’s removal based on grounds that she was convicted on April 8, 2010 of aggravated burglary, a second-degree felony, and aggravated battery, a third-degree felony,” King said in a news release. “Today she was sentenced for those crimes which, according to New Mexico law, means she can no longer remain in public office.”

Sloan was convicted of attacking another woman with a rock because she believed the woman was having an affair with her husband. She is appealing the conviction.

She was technically sentenced today to five years in prison – a sentence that was suspended as long as she completes supervised probation and pays $3,500 in fines and court fees.

If Sloan is removed, the governor would appoint her replacement, who would serve until the winner of the November election takes office in January.

  1. The PRC displays the worst of New Mexico politics wrapped up in a tiny case study.

  2. King actually does exist? That’s great Dr. King, thanks for taking such a strong stand by asking the Supreme Court to remove a convicted felon (insert laughter). I know of about 25 more in Santa Fe that you’ve ignored.

  3. It must be election time. I have heard more from King in the last 4 months than I have his last 4 years. You might fool a few people that your doing your job but your not fooling me!

  4. Maybe he should submit a pink slip for Jerome Block Jr. too.
