GOP Hispanic candidates win straw poll in Elephant Butte

Hispanic candidates came out on top in three contested primary races in a straw poll taken at a forum in Elephant Butte earlier this week.

At the Tuesday forum, Susana Martinez narrowly won a straw poll asking which gubernatorial candidate those in attendance favored. John Sanchez came out on top in the lieutenant governor’s race in the poll. And Jamie Estrada won big in the District 5 Public Regulation Commission race in the poll.

It’s worth noting that Martinez won even though she wasn’t at the forum. Martinez, Weh and Maez missed the event. Straw polls aren’t scientific and are most useful when viewed as a test of organization in the area in which they are conducted.

Coleen Greer, one of the event’s organizers, said 68 people voted in the straw poll, out of about 130 who attended the forum.

  2. ,,, but just saw a news piece that the Richardson administration welcomes every tourist into the State and encourages them to spend money here. The statement was associated with a story on the Arizona immigration law.

  3. Ksparks – taking the illegal child and kicking out the parents is not a good idea … breaking up families is counter to what we ought to stand for … deport all of them, allow the child to enter on his or her own when they are 18.

  4. Valley – you are mistaken on one point – the only TWO candidates to show up for every event is Arnold-Jones and Turner. Weh ducks practically everything, Martinez is starting to duck practically everything, Domenici goes more frequently than those two but inexplicibly notifies radio shows and gatherings on the day of the event that he can’t attend – for example. in Ruidoso this past Monday on KEDU and the Lincoln County FRW. If Arnold-Jones or Turner commit to attend – they do – and they hit practically everything.

  5. An illegal just shot an Arizona Deputy Sheriff about 70 miles south of Phoenix…time to make these laws even stricter.

  6. politicalguy, I think what eubank was referring to with her verbatim quote from the 14th Amendment was that if ILLEGAL Mom hops a fence while pregnant and baby falls out on American soil then the 14th Amendment applies to the baby. That is the technicality that illegals from Mexico have used for years in order to get free hand-outs and stay in the country with their “American born” offspring, while costing the states and federal government millions.

    If that is the stance that they want to take then fine, the U.S. baby will be promptly taken into custody by an American state’s Child Protective Services, parental rights will immediately and permanently be terminated, and the baby placed up for adoption (which would happen very quickly with a newborn). Illegal Mom (and if applies, Dad) will be immediately arrested deported back. I like that better, it is easier than trying to amend the 14th Amendment and serves to discourage this practice while providing childless couple with a new source of babies to adopt.

  7. eubank: What part of “[not] abridge the privileges or immunities of CITIZENS of the United States” do you not understand? Citizens won’t be deported, but aliens will be, under the AZ law.

  8. Lynn, you can invoke all the Constitutional verbatim’s you want. We can always amend the amendment.

  9. I hope that these Hispanic candidates from the GOP happen to have passports. Otherwise, they may be detained if they decide to take a trip to or through our neighboring state to the west.

    As far as the proposal to deport the US-born children of illegal immigrants is concerned, I hope that those proposing this idea have read the 14th Amendment to the Constitution, reading, in part:

    1. All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.

  10. Ramirez, Congressman Duncan Hunter (R-CA) is advocating legislation to deport US-born children of ILLEGAL immigrants!!! BIG DIFFERENCE. Why give rights to the offspring of parents that just jumped a fence and gave birth? No way, Jose’!!

    Look at the amazing slate of elected New Mexico Hispanics that have created one of the most corrupt state governments in the country. No, I’m not a racist, I’m stating facts. There are absolutely wonderful people of Hispanic origin all over New Mexico and America for that matter but, it cuts both ways. I am a very strong Susana Martinez supporter but, I think even she is smart enough to realize that a baby born to illegals is yet another drain of our hard earned taxes in this stae and in this country.

  11. I think the smart money is on Martinez and Estrada winning their primary elections. We are seeing a lot of John Sanchez commercials here in Albq but they aren’t convincing me or many of the other Hispanics I talk to.

  12. I hear that Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-CA) is willing to pass legislation to now deport the US-born children of immigrants. The Republican establishment needs to WAKE UP NOW. Tell Hunter to come to New Mexico and say that, especially those that are working hard for fiscal responsibility and many of the ideals his party holds dear.

    Look at this amazing slate of candidates that are the product of New Mexico Hispanics. Are any of us in danger of deportation now?

  13. Nice showing for Susana. I would have expected this result, considering she’s hispanic herself. What’s striking to me is that Turner was neck and neck with her. I think that says a lot about the respect the hispanic community has for him. Perhaps they like the fact that he speaks spanish and, more importantly, shows up to every single forum and debate, which cannot be said for the other candidates.
