Cabinet secretaries joining Rael for fundraiser

A number of Gov. Bill Richardson’s top cabinet secretaries are joining Lt. Gov. candidate Lawrence Rael for a campaign fundraiser on May 11, the Albuquerque Journal is reporting.

Katherine Miller, Joe Williams, John Garcia, Jon Goldstein, Rick Homans, Ron Curry and Ken Ortiz are those attending. That shouldn’t be interpreted as Richardson supporting Rael, a spokesman told the Journal, but he said the governor “has a high regard for Lawrence Rael.”

The secretaries’ involvement in the fundraiser is interesting because one of Rael’s opponents, Brian Colón, is the candidate in the Democratic primary for lieutenant governor who is most commonly associated with Richardson. Colón chaired the state Democratic Party during much of Richardson’s tenure and was involved in a nonprofit foundation Richardson started.

As Republicans aim to tie the Democrats’ candidate for governor, Diane Denish, to Richardson and his scandal-plagued tenure, some have said making Colón her running mate might hurt Denish’s chances. Does the fact that so many Richardson cabinet secretaries are helping Rael raise money mean Republicans can now tie Rael to Richardson?

  1. Colon is his own man, all you have to do is look at his record.

  2. A man that is for bigger government and more spending of dollars the state doesn’t have. Anything that is tied to Richardson is a sure loss for the candidate.

  3. Of course many like the free ride. Many like most government handouts, as long as they don’t have to pay. Rael is just another professional politician and bureaucrat, a La Politica member. His “accomplishments” are about as usual for such, nothing outstanding and of course embellishment of same is the way of politics.

  4. Dr. J might not like the Rail Runner, but most New Mexicans do. And whatever you think of the train, Rael brought the project in on time and on budget, proving once again his ability to get things done. He managed billion dollar a year budgets in Albuquerque for years, without even a whiff of scandal. Plus people really like the guy.

There’s a reason he’s starting to move ahead.

  5. I think you only need to tie Rael to the taxpayer funded (and taxpayer money wasted) Richardson Rail boondoggle to raise money against him.
