Montoya says he’s staying in land commissioner race
Democratic Land Commissioner candidate Harry Montoya says he’s staying in the race even though he didn’t get 20 percent at the party’s preprimary nominating convention on Saturday.
“Yes Heath, I am going to collect the signatures, already started yesterday!” Montoya wrote in an e-mail.
Ray Powell easily won the land commissioner vote at the convention, winning the support of 44.43 percent of delegates. Montoya came in second at 19.32 percent, while Sandy Jones finished third at 18.64 percent and Mike Anaya came in fourth at 17.61 percent.
Jones says he’s also staying in the race. Anaya hasn’t made a public announcement about his plans.
By law, those who fail to get 20 percent at the convention have to collect twice as many signatures as those who do get 20 percent if they want to appear on the ballot. And no candidate who has failed the organizational test of getting 20 percent at the convention has gone on to win the primary.

Well said Hemingway, the others must be cronies. Harry, Jones, and Anaya just don’t have a life without being some elected official, as their day jobs don’t pay enough and they don’t have enough ego gratification and power. It doesn’t matter that they are totally unqualified, a professional politician like Harry thinks they know everything. We need a qualified person like Powell, not more La Politica hacks who don’t listen to the people on Aarmodt, school board issues in Pojoaque, and other things.
I do agree with Politica in this case; Harry Montoya has an impressive CV. It’s just not quite made for Commissioner of Public Lands. As a Legislator, I think he would be wonderful, and it’s something he should consider for the future.
The job of the land commissioner is to make money for education by leasing our state lands. We need someone who understands business. I commend Montoya for being a school board member. But the bottom line is that the land office’s job is to make money for education. It is up to our legislators to decide how to use that money. Maybe Montoya should run for a state rep. Good guy, just not the guy for this position.
He has plenty of experience with Educational issues, being a former school board member. We need a land commissioner that will keep the most important part of the office in mind; managing our public lands in a fashion that will benefit our public education system; not to push a pro-environmental anti-gas and oil agenda that does nothing to fill our school’s coffers. That’s what Powell is about.
Mr. Montoya has a master’s degree in counseling psychology from New Mexico State University and a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Westmar University in LeMars, Iowa. This will not be of any benefit to the management of the State land Office. Messrs. Montoya and Jones should drop out and support Mr. Ray Powell. Otherwise Matthew Rush with lots of campaign money will win the Land Commissioner job – which will be like another four years of Lyons. I guess Democrats will shoot themselves in the foot.
