new_direction_2010: I have to say again that the governor does not prosecute criminals, the Attorney General does. The governor does not put criminals in jail, the DA's across the sate do (haven't you watched Law & Order? it's not the governor in the DA's office, it's the DA and his or her team.)

As governor, Susana would be totally lost in the thicket of Democrat appointees and the process of governing would be completely alien to her. In effect, the bureaucrats would be running the asylum, and it would take Susana many months, if not years, to get up to speed. That's not good enough for New Mexico.

I think a candidate with a prosecutor's background with have extra special resonance with the electorate in light of all the criminal activity among public officials that has transpired over the past 8 years. Besides, any good chief executive surrounds themself with a knowledgeable and experienced team of cabinet secretaries.

Also, the casework that a DA confronts on a day to day basis is comprised of the basic societal challenges we face everyday stemming from poverty, limited educational opportunities, problems with law enforcement and subsequent criminal and public safety issues...sounds like all within the purview of a governor's day to day duties to me.

The insiders love Martinez. That's clear from the results and from the comments in the chattering classes, as this article demonstrates. One wonders why the insiders believe that a prosecutor has the skills and experience to govern effectively. Governors do not prosecute crimes, after all. Nor will any Republican governor be allowed to bully the legislature, which will likely remain largely Democratic even in this anti-incumbent climate. Even if Richardson was and remains a bully, that doesn't mean the GOP will be allowed to have one as a chief executive, too.

And do we even WANT another one?

As noted already, Arnold-Jones and Turner (as well as all the others) had enough signatures going into this convention to go on to June 1 regardless of this little popularity contest's results. It only determines ballot order.

Regardless, Arnold-Jones, Turner ... plan to stay in the race, which will require about 1,200 more signatures from each.

Arnold-Jones said she already has more than enough signatures to stay in the race.

Turner said he also has already gathered the necessary signatures to stay in the race.
