Two more guv candidates admit trying marijuana

Doug Turner

A week after Pete Domenici Jr. admitted to “recreational” marijuana and cocaine use decades ago, two more Republican gubernatorial candidates, Doug Turner and Janice Arnold-Jones, say they also tried marijuana years ago.

“I tried marijuana between high school and college,” Turner said in an e-mail sent via his campaign spokesman, Stephen Dinkel. Turner said he has never used any other illegal drug.

Arnold-Jones, who is on a fundraising trip in New Jersey, told NMPolitics.net today that she tried a marijuana cigarette once, with her boyfriend, in 1972 while she was attending UNM, but said she “didn’t like it.” She also said she bought a pack of cigarettes 30 years ago, but after smoking just nine, decided she didn’t like them either.

Republicans Allen Weh and Susana Martinez told NMPolitics.net, through their spokespeople, that they have never smoked marijuana or used any other illegal drug.

Diane Denish, the Democratic candidate for governor, was traveling and did not respond to a question about whether she’s ever tried illegal drugs in time for this posting.

Update, Feb. 24, 7:45 p.m.

NMPolitics.net checked with the Denish campaign again today. Communications Director Chris Cervini told us that the lieutenant governor has never smoke marijuana or used any other illegal drug.

  1. So … we’re still yakkin’ about this? The State is in the crapper, we have 20+ quasi-governmental entities that can levy taxes on their own or issue bonds for which we are responsible (i,e, district 3 and district 7 housing authorities), our main bond issuing entities have absolutely NO way to guage or assess reasonableness for sees for bond issuance and are tied, consistently, to two or three law firms for advice, the governor fired the head of the agency that uncovered the Vaughan scam (so who knows what else he was getting close to), we have a train that is skimming the cream of taxes out of Bernalillo, Sandoval and Valencia + the state, an R Gov candidate who was for the train before he was against it (Weh), the most qualified R candidate has no name ID, Denish is sounding a lot like Bill Richardson in 2002 but has no real idea or experience to support those ideas and has bullied other potential candidates out of the race, the governor wants to rush the legislature back into session when the numbers haven’t changed (although there is rumor they are getting worse) because he is worried out-of-state investors will think we don’t know what we’re doing (load, shoot, aim …), Santa Claus is ready to retire, the easter bunny can’t afford to buy eggs, Rudolfs nose has burned out …. (I’m on a roll here …) and we’re yakkin’ about nonsense, which reveals we have (collectively) deep psychological problems). There are those who actually believe that if we keep doing what we’ve always done we’ll get a different result and some are actually befuddled that we’re last place in the all the good categories of achievement.

  2. ksparks, actually the history does not support your claims. This nation’s economy thrives under high taxes for the upper income brackets. Tax cut have been the order of the day since Reagan and have accelerated under Bush. Even Richardson cut taxes on the rich. Now, see where we are? We have a demand hole the size of the Grand Canyon to catch up with too much supply.

  3. David. Yes, Gary Johnson was a libertarian, so what’s your point? … he really wasn’t a republican except in name only.

But Seriously? You compare Pat Lyons to the likes of Manny Aragon? Michael Montoya? Robert Vigil? Some of the characters at the PRC? Rebecca Vigil Giron? And other news makers of their ilk?

    Not even close!

A republican here or there in statewide office does not equate to the kind of power and control the Dems have ‘enjoyed’. So, if you are happy with the way things are… by all means don’t change a thing. If you have grown tired of being dead last in everything… maybe a power shift would be a good thing for a change. Think about it. Please. Try.

  4. The Grand Ole Party of New Mexico has had more than a few oppurtunities at statewide office.

1.) Governor Gary Johnson: Whom the GOP doesn’t claim, and is currently seeking allegiance to a third party.

    2.) Pat Lyons:
a.) Member of the state board of finance
b.) City of Las Cruces, Phillipou
    c.) White Peaks Land Deal

As they say when you point fingers, three others are pointing back at you…

I would love to see a responsible GOP candidate with solutions, but for now we shouldn’t drink the kool-aid.

  5. David, the GOP solutions have always been to slash spending and lower taxes and it has ALWAYS worked. It’s the DEMS who have no solutions except to throw our money and bigger government at a problem to which has NEVER worked.

As for the marijuana issue, WHO CARES?!?! We are getting to the times to where the minority will not be who HAS tried it but WHO has not and the ones that have not will look like they have been hidden in a cave for most of their lives.

  6. Anyone that did not have the balls to smoke pot in THIS state during the 60s, 70s, 80s is not normal enough to hold any kind of power in THIS state.

  7. David. Does 70 years of Democrat Rule + New Mexico always being in last place = any correlation for you?

Nationally, it is true that the Republican party has blown it in a lot of places.

In New Mexico, the Republicans have been the minority party all these 70 years. Can you really assign blame to New Mexico Republicans for what is so wrong with this state? I mean Ethics? Education? Energy? Economic Development?

Which party’s politician’s are most often connected to ethics scandals, crime, corruption… convictions?

Who has had their hand on the pulse of education… and the resultant, clear, statistically, factually proven failures?

Why has psuedo-science replaced sound science as it applies to the oil, gas and mining interests that have provided half the state’s revenue… and now is being run out of New Mexico, potentially permanently?

What does giving major corporations taxpayer money do for the people who are being taxed?

The list of grievances attributable to Democrats is long, very long!

Republicans do have solutions. They come in the form of streamlining government by focusing on what serves a majority of taxpayers and not special interests, ridding us of ethical lapses, crime and corruption through real hands on training and enforcing laws and protecting whistleblowers, establishing responsible energy policy that attracts revenue potential while also protecting the environment without radical extremism, creating small business growth and jobs through responsible regulations and public policies, and building all of that upon an education system that puts children first, not teachers, not unions… and on and on.

When Republicans take control of New Mexico this coming November, I predict you will have an opportunity to see what a breath of fresh air looks like!

  8. The GOP doesn’t seem to have many solutions these days. It’s almost as if they only wish to grab for power, set a flame to it and it watch it burn.
