Gov. Bill Richardson plans to call lawmakers into special session at noon on Wednesday to try again to fix the state’s massive budget deficit.

Richardson made the announcement at a news conference held shortly after the regular, 30-day session expired today at noon without a budget fix.

Richardson said he wants the session sooner, rather than later, in part because it’s an election year.

  1. Here is an update to The Plan … there isn’t one – well, there isn’t one created by a thinking, literate, logical, human being. We’ll start a special session tomorrow with a base assumption of 6 percent income growth for the budget (according to good thinker Tim Jennings) … BUT … the Rockefeller Institute just provided 4th quarter tax collection info for the states – and while NM did not provide any data (why would that be?), our neighboring states did and the SW states showed an average DECREASE of 18.1 percent on tax revenues – and we’re planning on a 6 percent bump up. What are they snortin’ on the 4th floor, and in the Speakers office?. The special session will simply depete our coffers by another quarter of a million (or more) dollars, with – again – nothing to show for it. The current fiscal year is still in the hole by more than $50 million and the truth for next years income is about 4.5 billion – so we’re at least 600 million in the flushing device. The Governor and the Speaker have lost touch – perhaps because they can’t put the touch on any one any more – with reality. The special session is a fools errand ….

  2. So … what’s the plan? Oh … I forgot … Bill announced a special session and instead of staying here to work on issues prior to the legislature stepping back into the Round House … he flew to DC (in Da Plane?), had dinner with the prez, and had lame duck talks with other Gov’s and stopped in to see Babs. I wonder what the House leadership has been doing … maybe the Speaker went with Bill to say ‘hi’ to sonny! The new logo for the executive branch should be the Alfred E. Newman photo with the caption, “What, me worry?” (can someone photo shop that?).

The sad truth is that there isn’t a plan, and the two chambers were no where to being close – the House never saw the senate bill – they had no idea what was in it other than what the blogs and video clips were able to convey to them. If this weren’t so serious, and so sad … it’d make a great reality show …
