It is obvious stever and sugars know nothing of the oil industry. Having been raised in the oil patch and being very cognizant of the drilling and ecological procedures that have been developed over the last 30 years it is not detrimental to the ecology or the environment. An oil or gas well can be drilled through a water table without contaminating the water and 99% of all oil and gas wells are environmentally friendly. Look at the fish on offshore that make rigs their home and the birds and wild life that make their homes close to rigs on land.
Sugar and stever need to get an education in geology, petroleum engineering and catch up on the development of the drilling processes over the last three decades. They might then know about that which they speak.

Having now read Susana's views on energy and jobs, and also reading Bob Cornelius' last week, they would make a great team at Governor and State Land Commissioner. They both feel that it's important to take every precaution to protect our land, while at the same time not hindering job growth through energy. They both support alternative energy, as well as oil, natural gas, coal, and nuclear. This team can move New Mexico forward. Happily supporting both candidates!

It would be so nice if we could actually stop demonizing one another and start working together on combining our energy and our environmental needs. Why does it always have to be a zero sum game on these issues? And please, don't answer that question by pointing the finger at one sides transgressions--it just proves the point.

MIchael Swickard: for about three minutes there you had me thinking that we had discovered a new mammal species in New Mexico! LOL!

Cue the "destroying the environment to get in good with fat cat oil and gas executives" criticisms. On balance, New Mexico can have a viable and productive energy industry, one that creates jobs and tax revenue while utilizing moden drilling techniques to protect the environment.
Susanna - lost in this discussion is the core problem. There is no way to do economic development without any impact at all upon the environment. And the environmental lobby will not take a step back, in fact they are advancing even when so many New Mexicans are out of work and suffering.

The Rio Grande Spotted Mexican Desert Porcupine trumps our citizens in Santa Fe circles. Currently you never hear, “It is sad for the Rio Grande Spotted Mexican Desert Porcupine, but we are going to do this economic project because the citizens need it.”

If the majority of the people in the state want this state to rock in business, there will be some degradation of some environmental factors. To be clear, 99% of New Mexicans will not be able to sense the degradation, but the environmental lobby sure will and they will bring every resource they have to stop all development and to push New Mexico to a standstill.

Your task, if you take it on, is to a Steely-Eyed Governor who battles the ideologue to a standstill. Those who say that caterpillars have the same constitutional rights as citizens will line up to oppose you.

Are you up to that task?

Susana is a highly competent candidate that could be Diane Denish's worst nightmare if she wins the primary. She is a complete breath of fresh air, giving her party some badly-needed stamina going into mid-term elections. Since she is from Las Cruces, she would bring a whole new perspective to state government. But she needs to start raising some serious bucks.

Her ideas are bright, and I know she would serve New Mexico well. Great Op-ed Susana. Keep the ideas flowing.
