Taylor: ‘Red bottom line’ an ally in fight against tax hikes
House Minority Leader Tom Taylor, R-Farmington, says the Legislature has an opportunity right now to cut waste out of government, and he said his caucus is fairly united behind that goal.
“We’re not going to consider tax increases until we have done everything we can do to reform and streamline government and get rid of this waste,” he said in an interview. “… We have a great opportunity to do super things for New Mexico.”
Taylor, a former mayor of Farmington, said the city went through two economic downturns during his tenure. The city found ways to make budget cuts without losing services, he said, “and we came out far better on the other side.”
“If we don’t take that opportunity in state government, we’re foolish,” he said.
Meanwhile, many Democrats are pushing various tax increases, in addition to budget cuts and drawing down state reserve funds, as a way to help balance the budget. As the wrangling continues, Taylor said don’t count out the view of House Republicans just because they are the minority party.
“I have one ally that is neither Democrat or Republican, and that ally is a red bottom line,” he said.

Richardson gave a huge tax cut to the rich in 2003. We are in trouble so it is time to rescind those tax cuts.
If you want to eliminate waste get rid of the unwarranted tax incentive give-aways for the film industry!
New Mexico’s state government is huge, to many agency’s, to many programs, and to many tax and spend politicians. It’s time to support anyone that wants to stop this kind of thinking. Astute Observer is right why are we not trying to balance the budget , and this may sound kind of odd thing coming from a guy that wants to see state government shrink but does anyone realize how many positions are not being filled and are kept open (critical positions that might put citizens at risk) because of the fact no one can figure out what the legislature is going to do. This is a dangerous game we are playing, we do need state employees to keep legitimate services going “road repair, court clerks, state police” come on balance the budget so these and other agencies know what they have to work with, every day you delay is just another day we flounder and look stupid.
Kudos to Rod Taylor. Keep up the good work. I agree with Transparency. We need less government and more Constitutional principals along with more individual responsibility.
At the rate and way we are heading we can’t win. But we can get real change at the polls in November. We can vote out these progressives and get some real representation. Now that is real change we can count on.
Instead of just “no” all the time, how about dropping some bills with some ideas on how to fix this mess! Let’s see a little action behind this talk, Tom. As I walk around the the Capitol, I keep hearing that they are pushing the budget off until the last few days of the session. At this rate, why not gavel out each chamber and come back around February 18th? It would save us taxpayers a couple million dollars. Of course, it might hurt the liquor sales at the Rio Chama!
IT IS THE BUDGET STUPID (I keep seeing that) – I admire Taylor and the members of his caucus and the mantra from Arnold-Jones on opening day – Budget First, Budget Only … kind of catchy … I can’t believe that both houses took off last Thursday night and didn’t come back until Monday morning … we’re in deep poo and all we’re hearing about is Same Day Voting, Domestic Partnerships, and the evening parties! WHERE IS THE ACTION ON THE BUDGET? Oh – I watched the web cam of the Tax & Rev Committee last night and they actually passed, along party lines, a bill to take an additonal 5% off of the top of the severance tax income stream and provide it to the tribes for infrastructure … which is on top of the existing 10% that they already get – followed by the 10% that does to water projects. Are they crazy?
Keep up the good fight Rep. Taylor. At least we know in NM that Republicans do fight for limited government, constitutional principles and economic prosperity through free markets and individual responsibility! You’ve got another ally too. The People! If the Dems continue to do what they’ve always done and protect their pet projects, special interests and wasteful, unsustainable spending… they will get a wave of discontent sweeping over them at the election booth come November and New Mexicans will have a chance to see a new way forward for the first time in over 70 years. Its different at the Federal level… but here in NM, there is no one to blame for always being last except the Dems. Time for REAL change! Keep fighting!
