Outgoing District 5 Las Cruces City Councilor Gil Jones says it’s not for him to analyze why he lost his re-election battle on Tuesday.

Progressive-backed candidates were successful in winning all three city council races on the ballot. Jones lost to Gill M. Sorg by about 30 percentage points.

“Everybody will have different opinions as to what transpired, and I don’t know that it’s for me to say,” Jones said.

“I’m going to miss my opportunity to work with my city councilors, the good staff of the city. … It’s been a pleasure to work with the public,” he said. “But how do we dissect this? I’m not sure that’s for me to say.”

  1. The voters blew this one. Jones is respectable, honest and approachable. Further, he knows the issues of this community as a near-lifelong resident. I tire of these carpetbaggers and their know-it-all approach to local government. I give them credit for being well-organized, but that’s it. Their agenda is frightening. Equally frightening, however ,is David Roewe, and I wish Councilor Jones would have done a better job showing his distance from Roewe’s radical approach to unmanaged growth. Jones took a balanced approach to city government, and I’m sorry to see him go. — CCNM
