Dem chairman touts progressive wins in Cruces

Javier Gonzales
The chairman of the Democratic Party of New Mexico says progressive wins in three city council elections in Las Cruces on Tuesday are a good sign for Democrats heading into the 2010 election.
The victories by progressives in Las Cruces came as Republicans had a good night in some other high-profile races across the nation. Republicans in New Mexico have put out several statements today playing up the GOP victories in other states.
Those Republicans should instead be paying attention to Las Cruces, Democratic Party Chairman Javier Gonzales said.
“While Republican leaders are focused on election results in other states, here in New Mexico, Democratic candidates built on the energy and enthusiasm created during of the 2008 elections to claim victories in yesterday’s city election in Las Cruces,” he said in a news release.
“I’d like to congratulate Olga Pedroza, Gill Sorg and Sharon Thomas on their impressive victories,” Gonzales added. “Democrats are organizing in all regions of New Mexico, continuing the movement Obama built in 2008, and we are well-positioned to win big again in 2010.”
Of course, some Republicans said the same thing – only about their party’s chances in 2010 — after the GOP took control of Albuquerque city government a few weeks ago.

I certainly disagree with that last statement. All of this chest-thumping about “change coming” is pretty premature especially because you are taking the bait: this chatter is a response to a press release from the State Democratic Party. Does that constitute an unbiased position? Of course not, they’re telling the story they need to tell and I don’t think anything about their record in NM indicates they are scared of anything. The State Party Dems know that more and more voters are leaving the Republican-brand and taking their chances as Independents. It’s a measurable fact that national Republican Identification is down to 22% and Democrats at 34.6%.
People know who put our economy and working class families on their knees and it wasn’t the Democrats or the Democratically-controlled congress, it was the Bush Administration and eight years of the largest expansion of government and spending since WWII. Even a Fox News Poll last week reported that when asked which president is “more responsible for the current state of the economy,” only 18 percent say President Obama. 58 percent say former President George W. Bush. (http://www.foxnews.com/projects/pdf/102909_poll.pdf)
Plus, as the other commenter pointed out, people will largely vote along party lines, so the table is set, but let’s pretend they didn’t:
where are the credible alternatives to the Statewide Ds? Allen Weh is that the only “known” quantity and I think the voters have already spoken on that matter. Where is the rest of the R talent pool and how will they get a leg up?
Doug Turner seems like a nice enough fellow, but let’s face it, he’s got zero name i.d., whereas Diane Denish starts out at full sprint AND she’s got 2 million bucks for refreshment along the way. There’s just no bench for the Rs (and please don’t ask me the name of that poor kid running for State Land Office) and it looks like more of the same for the foreseeable future.
It takes years if not decades, and certainly not months, to build a credible opposition.
Man, if this is what Democrats are touting as success, they must really be scared. Really Javier?
People are fed up. They didn’t have corruption in Virginia like we have here in New Mexico.
Watch out Mr. Gonzales, change is coming. Again.
If you want to keep the City Council and the Mayor at arms length from partisanship, then take a long look at Ken Miyagashima. He was just elected as a Mayor and then endorsed Obama for President. It is not possible to keep partisan politics from entering into or rearing its head when things like this take place.
The city of Las Cruces has become so big that the city race has become more partisan than it is non-partisan.
Thus Gonzales has come out about the race; just a Miyagashima did for Obama. Non-partisanship in any political race is a joke in not only this state but in all others as well. Get used to it because it is a part of our system and our lives. If I am a Dem I will vote party line and if I am a Republican I will still vote party line. This is the way the majority of the people think. Sad but this is just a fact of life.
We cannot vote for the person who will do the most good, when we have parties we belong to. There is too much bias one way or another in what we stand for.
The Dem’s shouldn’t get too full of themselves. I vote in District 6 and was push polled and flooded with mailing obviously backed by special interests. I did not vote for the winner as much as I voted against the tactics of her opponent. If you treat me like an idiot, I will vote against you regardless of party.
Ummm, can someone remind Chairman Gonzales that of the 6 running for city council, 5 were democrats? Thus, the outcomes were pretty much guaranteed from the beginning. Further, should he be touting the results of a non-partisan election?
