qofdisks, at the moment government has and should step in to provide support. But this should be viewed as temporary, as I am sure not even you would want government permanently the employer of choice and the only option. The larger, long term problem is not too little government regulations and involement in the economy, but too much. In NM, this trend in government employment swamping private is not a new phenomena. The many lessons of the Great Depression, written by the Nobel prize winning economists, all show that the Great Depression happened because government stepped in and destroyed private enterprise for a very long period of time, thus turning a short term recession into a depression. It wasn't all the entitlement welfare programs, it was the strangulation of innovation, creativity, and business futures by regulating and regulating some more and not giving the private sector any confidence in making new investments due to excessive and ever changing government control of all parts of citizens' and businesses' lives. Government welfare and entitlements is hard to get rid of, just like taxes, they never seem to go away, so the garbage just gets piled higher and deeper, with fewer and fewer people actually paying taxes. This is unsustainable economically, but it seems to be just the ticket for progressive politicians who want to retain power. That is what is scary.

Dr. JCorporatism is failing to provide security for the people. So, yes, the only other place to turn is to the government. The government will have to provide employment and benefits otherwise, our great state will look quite like Mexico with children begging on the streets in short order. You criticize government when there is really no alternative for provision. As far as any free enterprise leaving the state, it is to go to another country with no labor rights or environmental restrictions. Would you have those conditions applied here at home? If wages continue being depressed only government will be able to step in to provide a basic standard of living for people that work, have children and age.I am telling you, corporations are not providing and have no morality, conscience or loyalty to America. It takes more than greed to run a civilization. Government has taken a pass on controlling greed and now government is strapped and held responsible to provide.

Well said Dr. I would also point out that NM has slipped back into a very troubling pattern of increased government spending (local, county, state, AND now more federal through the porkulus) and has greatly neglected private, free enterprise activity. Today I would estimate 1 in every 2 jobs is tied to government spending. That is very unhealthy, unproductive, lacks economic leverage, and is making NM dependent on government largess for her future. That is dangerous and unsustainable. As long NM government continues to work hard to make NM more and more dependent on government spending and drives business and free enterprise out of the state, we will have to live with either cuts or taxes, there is no alternative. Somehow, I think the political elites in government want it that way, they are designing the future and they like what they see. In fact, it fits their world view, everyone and everything dependent on government, i.e. THEM for everything.
