As for education, I think we need to start leaving more children behind. Those children that do not desire to learn need to be separated out from the ones that do their work. Kids that make a C or better can go to class and the rest can be put in cages throughout the day while their parents are at work. A teacher would stand outside the cages and "teach". Any kid can earn their way out of the cage. Really, we no longer have a bell curve of achievement in our schools. We have a dumbbell shape with many A's and B's, a few C's and then lots and lots of D's and F's. We need to try to restore that "bell" shape. They bad kids are pulling the good kids down by taking up 2/3 of the teacher's time and energy in classroom "management" instead of actual teaching. We really need to go with more quality and less quantity.
We need to focus on teaching our kids useful world skills, common sense and integrity. We need to instill work ethic, perseverance and delayed gratification. We need to teach them emotional maturity.

Astute Observer
If I had a doobie I would share it with you! I do not use it but, I want to be free to use it as my arthritis worsens with old age. I suspect most Baby Boomers could use a little pain relief and comfort that does not incapacitate.
Why waste our precious resources persecuting pot smokers? The Drug War has become a money pit within our criminal justice system. There is too much power and money protecting this crazy status quo against the will of the people.
There are better ways to deal with the human failing of addition. Moderate users should be free to indulge as they do their cocktails. Not everyone who uses pot is a drug addict or drug abuser. Crazy prohibition is unenforceable and only serves to ruin good citizen's employment and educational standing...forever.
We can't afford to keep putting people in jail for victimless contrived crime.

Hey - gofdisks - pass the dubey, dude. As for the schools - heck - turn off all the lights ... no one is home anyway ... our kids could sleep late every day and not have a worse graduation and literacy rate. Instead of the fadish gimmicks that solve one problem and create another, we need to rethink the whole deal - learn from our own history and not mortgage the future as we continue to do. Raiding the permanent funds is myopic. As Michael Douglas said in his role as An American President, ".... we have servious problems and we need serious people to solve them ..." Time to step away from the tired old wing-nut answers 'cause they ain't workin' here.

"Think of the electricity saved if half of the lights in high schools are turned off."
That is actually a good idea. Environmental buildings should all incorporate natural light and be able to open windows.
NM needs to scale back the failed drug war and stop incarcerating so many people. I am all for closing prisons and releasing everyone involved with drugs. We need to decriminalize drugs and let people be free. I am a libertarian that way.
