SOS Web site now says it’s ‘down for upgrades’
Talk about putting a positive spin on a bad situation. A newly posted message on the secretary of state’s Web site claims that “upgrades” are the reason the office’s computer systems and Web site are down.
“SECRETARY OF STATE’S WEBSITE DOWN FOR UPGRADES,” states the headline on the message, which was posted late Friday on a page that is otherwise devoid of content.
“The Secretary of State’s network is currently down for upgrades. Our website will be unavailable during this time. Return to normal operations after the upgrades are completed. We apologize for the inconvenience,” the message states. “If you have any questions, please call our office at: 505-827-3600.”
The message contains no other information.
“Currently down for upgrades?” That’s not exactly what we were told last week.
Officials said earlier on Friday that problems knocked out the secretary of state’s new and still-under-development campaign finance and disclosure system, all other computer systems in the office and the office’s Web site. Systems that are necessary for the public to do all sorts of business, from accessing campaign and lobbyist information to registering trademarks and other dealings between businesses and state government, are down.
“Right now we are having IT issues at the SOS,” Deputy Secretary of State Don Francisco Trujillo II said Friday, before the message was posted on the Web site. “Everything is down. All of our systems are currently down.”
Hmm…

I warned them that this would happen. This state and IT infrastructure is not just underfunded. The state runs under a notorious environement of cronyism and incompetence. Had they hired me as their Infrstructure Architect this would never have happened. But alas, I did nto have the right last name or pedigree.
Not to mention the fact that I helped build the Internet in Silicon Valley and have run some of the largest websites in the world. I am now happy back in California where our corruption costs much more.
"Down for upgrades" seems an honest statement. Usually a site will try to get the upgrades in place and have a seamless switch, but that did not happen.
I've been using the SOS site for four years now, and I suspect the problems are due to chronic underfunding of the department. How many other government departments have volunteers answering the phones at times?
Wow, I am really glad they had all those "experts" descend on the office this weekend. Maybe they should call the High School computer club or Geek Squad. I bet the guy they put on leave is really glad to be out of this morass. Maybe we should go the UT and HI route and try life with out a Secretary of State or is that the experiment that they are running now.
"Talk about putting a positive spin on a bad situation."
At what point is "spin" simply dishonest?
How much "dishonesty" do we have to tolerate? It is after all, "our" website.
