Photos from the Las Cruces tea party

My best guess is that about 400 people attended Wednesday’s tea party in Las Cruces. I’m writing a more in-depth, analytical piece based on my experience at the event, but in the meantime, I wanted to share photos with you. Here are a few I took. (Remember they’re copyrighted. 1. More excellent video on how truly ridiculous these folks are:

    "Patriot" Glen Beck praises Secessionists:

Hmmmm, I guess good ole' Abe Lincoln is persona non-grata now that it's CONSTITUTIONAL TO SECEDE FROM THE UNION.

    Absolutely fabulous!!!

  2. We don’t a tea party we need a square deal for the American people. Teddy Roosevelt said it best:

“I stand for the square deal. But when I say that I am for the square deal, I mean not merely that I stand for fair play under the present rules of the game, but that I stand for having those rules changed so as to work for a more substantial equality of opportunity and of reward for equally good service….

The absence of effective state and, especially, national, restraint upon unfair money-getting has tended to create a small class of enormously wealthy and economically powerful men, whose chief object is to hold and increase their power. The prime need is to change the conditions which enable these men to accumulate power….

We grudge no man a fortune which represents his own power and sagacity, when exercised with entire regard to the welfare of his fellows…. We grudge no man a fortune in civil life if it is honorably obtained and well used.

It is not even enough that it should have been gained without doing damage to the community. We should permit it to be gained only so long as the gaining represents benefit to the community.

This, I know, implies a policy of a far more active governmental interference with social and economic conditions in this country than we have yet had, but I think we have got to face the fact that such an increase in governmental control is now necessary.

No man should receive a dollar unless that dollar has been fairly earned. Every dollar received should represent a dollar’s worth of service rendered—not gambling in stocks, but service rendered.

The really big fortune, the swollen fortune, by the mere fact of its size, acquires qualities which differentiate it in kind as well as in degree from what is possessed by men of relatively small means. Therefore, I believe in a graduated income tax on big fortunes, and in another tax which is far more easily collected and far more effective—a graduated inheritance tax on big fortunes, properly safeguarded against evasion, and increasing rapidly in amount with the size of the estate.”

  3. As partisan as I might be, no honest person could claim this is a one sided problem. In spite of the stellar leadership of Pelosi, Reid and Dean, republican leadership has full responsibilty for 2006 and 2008.

Sometimes when observing free speech, using some intelligence is required before criticizing.

  4. Politicagal, you should have been there with the rest of the working stiffs. The march was scheduled at 4:30 and the Rally at 6 pm so real live taxpayers could attend.

If you were there you would have known it was not an anti-Obama rally.

  5. FWIW,

In case anyone with an inquiring mind is interested, here’s a sampling of what the underlying sentiments fueling the “Tea-Party-Revolt-Secede-from-the-Union” scam event of yesterday is REALLY about:

Check some of this garbage out folks. When did Obama’s race have anything to do with taxes?.

  6. Once again, I wrote a comment that was too truthful for Heath to allow to be published. I agree with political gal and david, and even michael swickard.

FYI, Heath: stenography is not journalism.

  7. If these people can spend all day protesting ,do any of them have a job where they actually pay any taxes. Where were all these patriotic people when Bush out sourced our manufacturing jobs to other countries because they didn’t have to pay minimum or union wages. it is knd of ironic to me that they stand there waving the American Flag and our backing a revolution in this country.I heard on Good Morning america this morning that 1 out 4 children in New Mexico goes to bed hungry. If they are so concerned about america. let them do something positive. As far as their children and grand-children paying a debt , they were already going to pay the debt by the war expenses that \Bush ran up. I think the right wing is grasping at straws. The days of Bush’s father are over, read my lips no new taxes. The younger Bush ran up a larger debt than Hoover. I don’t think that is smaller government. Do not blame all of this on Obama.

  8. this right-wing press for publicity is a tragedy.
George Bush’s America led to the Status Quo in a Democratic Country.
The contrast between the Boston Tea Party and this shennigan is quite stark…
    Que Lastima!

  9. The question is: were these people just emoting for the moment or is it an actual movement? Was this a photo op or the real deal?

We won’t know until the next election. We won’t know until we see that this loosely organized group starts to act as one voice.

If these people act like 400 separate and different voices then it is really just one person at a time standing somewhere shouting against the wind. If there are connections and plans and organization, some political action may happen.

  10. Dear TnT – There were Hispanics, students, and Seniors present. Your discriminating remarks show a lack of education and class.

It hurts the far-right to see true Democracy in action and the real possibility of change!

I believe that the far-left should take serious notice that Americans are sick and tired of the “tax and spend” liberals that have plagued this country far more than George W. Bush during Democrats 60 year rule in D.C. and in New Mexico.

So before making any dispairing remarks…stop and remember what kind of leaders the left has sported Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton and now Barak Obama. Please, open your eyes and see reality and enjoy your short lived fantasy and see what hardworking, determined Americans can to when needed.

I just pray that this movement will continue as we elect City Councilors this November and Governor and State Legislators in 2010.

I am reminded of the camp youth song…”It only takes a spark to get a firing going.”

May the fire of liberty, democracy and justice burn in all Americans hearts – Black, White, Native, Asian, and Hispanic.

VIVA AMERICA! LAND OF THE FREE AND THE BRAVE!

  11. Good pics, many younger people than the one I attended, lucky you are in a college town. It is correct to say this is grassroots gathering of many people. It is correct that the feeling of our government spending more than any of us, our children, grandchildren, etc. will ever be able to afford is growing rapidly in this country.

By and large, Americans are conservative fiscally and frugal and want to live within their means, the recent bailout of the minority that don’t and the anger over responsible citizens paying for irresponsible greed and envy of this minority is also real. If the government, both parties, doesn’t wake up and stop the wasteful spending, pork, earmarks, and bailouts of people who should have to pay for their own bad judgements, and get our country off the path to bankruptcy, they will pay a heavy price come next election. Talk and words are nothing and mean nothing (contrary to what Obama says), we want concrete action.

This is not about today’s taxes (currently taxes are OK with most people, and fair), it is about our government spending too much, wasting too much, and thus driving future taxes to extremely unfair and ridiculous levels that will choke off American growth and industry. If no one protests and calls the political hacks on the carpet for this, we will be sorry.

  12. Fancy signs? Really. Yeah I am sure some big corporation hand wrote ALL those signs hundreds of thousands of people across America in over 750 locations carried.

TnT and politicians need to wake up this is real grassroots organization. Great photos Heath. There were at least 5,000 here in Albuquerque and probably 5,000 more driving by and honking. And a VERY diverse group of people.

BTW, those big corporations y’all are againts are in bed with the democrats. Ie. Chris Dodd, Barny Frank, Joe Biden, Obama. Wake up.

  13. Economist Paul Krugman calls this “Astroturf” organizing, ie fake grassroots. I see lots of white bread, lots of fancy signs. Read the bill? How about these folks read the list of who is sponsoring them.

  14. What a great set of photos.
    Thanks for posting them.
