Mr. ‘Short, Bald and Honest’ runs for county position

Remember Greg Sowards, the Republican who spent hundreds of thousands of dollars of his own money to spread his catchy slogan — short, bald and honest — when he was running for Congress earlier this year?

Though he lost that race, many Las Crucens will get another chance to vote for him in November.

Republican Scott Seiler has dropped out of the District 5 Doña Ana County Commission race, the Las Cruces Sun-News is reporting. The party has replaced him on the ballot with Sowards.

With a clever slogan and easy-to-remember Web address — shortbaldhonest.com — Sowards secured 17 percent of the vote in the 2nd Congressional District Republican primary in June and won Doña Ana County, but he lost that five-way race to Ed Tinsley.

Sowards will face Democrat Leticia Benavidez in November. The winner will replace Bill McCamley on the commission.

Matthew Martin, the Republican who had been running against state Rep. Antonio Lujan, D-Las Cruces, in the District 35 race, has also dropped out, the newspaper reported. The GOP has not yet replaced Martin on the ballot.

  1. Mr. Sowards I had to respond to your blind and deaf comments.
If you are familiar with the bible, and even if you are not, I would really suggest that you read Matthew 7:1-5. I think this will hopefully put things into perspective for you.

  2. In my experience those who describe themselves as honest do so because no one else will.(unlike short and bald )

  3. Wow! Short. Bald…and TOUCHY! I guess the whole “short-man syndrome” isn’t a myth…

I support voter in this fight. I have to say that when people post comments here and someone doesn’t like what they say, and then demand they “uncloak” themselves, they are really showing how little they know about the reality of reader’s comments on blogs. Go to any major weblog that has a comments section, and you’ll see that everyone uses a pseudonym, mostly because it’s the CONTENT of what they are saying, not who they are, that is the point. Comments sections sometimes get into a little bit of back and forth between posters who don’t agree–suck it up, folks.

When someone on one of these sites thinks they have a right to my identity, it makes me think they are trying to intimidate me from giving my completely constitutionally protected and essentially powerless, opinion.

  4. Agreed, I just care as much for the “ones” opinions as the groups. They are all relevant. It’s just that when I don’t know who you are and you hide behind anonymity, it is like being closed minded. So I will leave it with this thought. Who is as blind as he who will not see? Who is as deaf as one who will not hear? Later

  5. Wow, sounds like I hit a nerve. Im entitled to my opinion, like it or not. But Im only one voter, right. I guess we are going to have to agree to disagree because this is not going to go anywhere and you wont change my mind.

  6. “No ego here, I’m not running for office”, so by your stated logic, anyone who runs for office is judged as an egotistical self-serving politician, and no one else is driven by ego. How do you justify a vote for anyone much less your choice for congress, are you related to him? That attitude is an obvious cynical point of view, one no candidate can escape.

“I just call it like I see it”, and the lenses you are looking through, your ego? By my responding, I “proved your point”, did it really? Was your point that only egotistical politicians don’t appreciate being publicly slandered with faulty logic from the shadows, or did I miss it?

Why don’t you identify yourself? You might be logging on from the State Penitentiary for all we know? Come out of the shadows, why participate as a “drive by” blogger? I’m surprised that Heath allows posts from unidentified “drive-by” bloggers.

It states on the leave your comment page, “that this blog does not allow anonymous comments.” Apparently Heath is asleep at the keyboard. Why post if you don’t want to own your comments, or are embarrassed by them? Is it self-serving ego?

Yes, I ran for Congress in 1996. I became an Independent in 1997 when it became obvious to me that I had ruffled feathers in running against a Republican incumbent, not something a political opportunist does. I did not run again, for any office, until 2008 – for Congress. Hardly a frivolous runner, looking for any political office.

Through unforeseen circumstances, I now have the opportunity to run for County Commissioner. I look at it as an opportunity to serve the people of this county and implement the principles I have talked about all my life. Is there something wrong with that?

Short Bald Honest, is hardly what one would call an egotists self aggrandizing slogan. :-)

We can do better than this, call me up, we can go to lunch. You can wear a bag over your head if you still don’t want to be identified, you can a least get to know me. :-)

  7. No ego here. Im not running for office. The fact that you responded to me the way you did just proves my point about you. I just call it like I see it. It appears to me that you are just wanting to get elected to any office doesnt matter which one, again to feed your ego.

  8. Voter, I don’t know who you are – but you don’t know me. From past comments it is easy to see that you have a very caustic and judgmental view of life and others efforts.

Egotist? I’ve been described many ways but “egotist” isn’t one of them. Yes, I feel my ideas are sound, and better than other candidates, not unusual for anyone who runs for public office, or why run? If a candidate doesn’t feel that way then EGO is their driving force.

With as many comments as you make, I question your ego. Call me up lets go to lunch and get to know each other.

  9. Sowards is too extreme and self righteous he also has a HUGE ego, he is not what anyone in Las Cruces needs.

  10. Sowards is a long needed addition to the County Commission. He would bring a necessary and over due balance that has been lacking in county government for some time now. Let’s get him elected!
