Pearce, Richardson debate ducking continues

Can you guess where Steve Pearce is today?

Congress isn’t in session, so you’d think the 2nd Congressional District representative would be in his Southern New Mexico district campaigning, what with the election less than two weeks away and all.

After all, he is invited to a League of Women Voters candidate forum that will be held tonight in Las Cruces.

But he’s not in Las Cruces. He’s not even in the district. Pearce, it turns out, was in Bernalillo today, along with other members of New Mexico’s congressional delegation and the governor, gripping and grinning at an event celebrating some new system that, according to a news release from Gov. Bill Richardson, “will help strengthen the state’s ability to guard against those who would try to smuggle radioactive material into New Mexico.”

The technology is going to be housed at the state’s port-of-entry facility in Gallup.

He gripped a few hands, he grinned for a few photographs, he gave a few quotes, but Pearce still won’t take the time for a televised debate with his opponent, Democrat Al Kissling.

And Richardson has the same time to grip and grin, but won’t debate his opponent, Republican John Dendahl.

You think either Richardson or Pearce will attend tonight’s candidate forum?

By the way, the forum is at the Munson Senior Center, 975 South Mesquite Street, and begins at 6:30 p.m. A bunch of other statewide candidates, in addition to candidates for district judgeships and seats on the Public Regulation Commission, will be in attendance.
