I recently co-authored two articles for The New York Times on efforts to legalize same-sex marriage in New Mexico.
As a freelancer for the newspaper, I was on the scene in my hometown of Las Cruces on Aug. 21 when the county clerk began issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples, helping report and write an article that day.
As clerks in five other counties followed suit, Fernanda Santos, The Times’ Phoenix bureau chief, and I took a deeper look at the issue. That article appeared as the lead story on the newspaper’s website for a time on Sept. 2. On. Sept. 3 it was the national section’s top story in the print edition of the paper.
